Presentation
Dominic de Guzman was a charismatic fellow who drew everyone into his orbit. Well, not everyone. If you were a heretic in his day, you were no fan of his. However, Dominic (or Domingo, as he was called in his native Castile), inspired a movement, known today as the Order of Preachers, which endures eight centuries later.
The Order of Preachers was approved by Pope Honorius III on December 22, 1216. As part of the 800th anniversary, Anna Marie Flusche, O.P. has prepared the following presentation.
Designed for those who know the basic narrative, the presentation features two short videos, as well as a lively discussion of some of the little known elements of the story. Included are topics such as:
- Thumbnail sketches of some of the women and men who followed Dominic
- The 13th century world of feudalism in which Dominic lived
- Some of the rogues and scoundrels who financed the Order
- A systematic exposé of the beliefs held by the heretics whom Dominic opposed
- The influence of the bishop who is regarded as the co-founder of the Order
- The surprising roots of the new style of preaching adopted by Dominic
- Music of the time (not all of it hymns)
- Some of Dominic's favorite saints and foods
- The role of the Albigensian Crusade in the foundation of the Order
Cost
For a cost of $250.00 (plus expenses) the presentation is 45 minutes of a PowerPoint presentation along with 15 minutes for Q&A.
